Sally at hinkle

Sally Wirthwein  '81

Graduating in 1981 with a degree in Journalism, Sally's first time in Hinkle Fieldhouse was for cheerleading tryouts her first week on campus.  A true blue Bulldog, she spent the the next four years on the squad and served as captain her junior and senior years.  While at Butler she served in student government, was named one of the 100 Outstanding Students in 1981, and was a proud member of Kappa Alpha Theta where she currently is serving her fifth term on the Facilities Corporation Board.

The coordinator of the Hinkle Hosts, Sally--Hinkle's unofficial historian--oversees a group of enthusiastic volunteers who give tours at Hinkle Fieldhouse.  Sharing the nearly 100 year old stories and history, Hosts greet visitors from across the country and the globe who have made the pilgrimage to see this Basketball Cathedral and check it off their bucket list.

To highlight the history and mystique of Hinkle Fieldhouse, Sally and her husband Chris '79, funded an endowment to create the Hinkle Historical Display in the front concourse in 2010.  They also served as cabinet members of the Campaign for Hinkle Fieldhouse in 2013 which provided direction of the $35 million renovations to the Fieldhouse. Most recently, Sally was instrumental in shepherding the process for Hinkle to be added to the Indiana State Historical Marker Program.

In 2016, the Wirthweins were honored with Butler's Mortar Award which is given to a person or couple who "personifies the Butler spirit by demonstrating great vision, leadership and generosity".

Their daughter, Grace Speckman is a '13 graduate of Butler and their son Alex is an avid Bulldog fan.  Between their two families, there are 10 members who attended Butler--including Chris' grandfather who graduated from Law School at Butler in 1921!

When not at Hinkle or researching Hinkle history, Sally can be found gardening, golfing and enjoying time with family and friends.
